Girl, Woman, Other

“I let her know she’s an apologist for the patriarchy and complicit in a system that oppresses all women

she says human beings are complex

I tell her not to patronize me.”

Excerpt from Girl, Woman Other by Bernadine Evaristo

After seeing at least 20 reviews of this book on my IG feed by fellow ‘bookstagrammers’, I finally caved, got a copy and began reading. From the first page, Evaristo had me hook, line, and sinker. I wondered why I had been sleeping on this woman for so long!

Girl, Woman, Other is a 2019 novel that follows the lives of 12 characters in modern Britain. The interconnected stories of these cis-, trans- and non-binary black women and how they navigate issues of feminism, sexuality, and race individually and collectively in the British sphere is so brilliantly captured by Evaristo.

I must say, I enjoyed her writing style. Her flow of words and conversations even with a disregard for normal punctuation is truly unique and helps you paint a vivid scenario of the storyline in your head. I would also have liked to see some of these stories play out a little longer, but I guess that’s the downside of short stories. However, Evaristo did an amazing job making these stories so real and poignant in a way that makes the reader almost a part of it.

Girl, Woman, Other, is altogether an informative, intersectional, and contemporary feminist book that you just HAVE TO read.
